February Den Meeting Update!

Our February Bear Den meeting was filled with craft activities!  We made centerpieces for the Bear den tables to be displayed at the Blue & Gold ceremony and put together stands for the Pinewood Derby cars.  The scouts had to use screwdrivers and screws to make their stands.

Please allow your son some time to “Do his best” by decorating his stand at home.  We would like him to bring it to the Blue & Gold ceremony so our den can show the rest of the pack what they made.

We completed the following requirements:  Achievements 21a, 21b, 21g

Please remember to have your scout bring his binder and handbook to each monthly den meeting so we can follow-up on all at-home achievements and have the scouts follow along by filling out the paw prints.

Also, please continue to fill up your gallon-sized baggie with caps for our conservation project.  We will be collecting these baggies every 2-3 months at the den meeting.  The scouts will add them a box which will be mailed to Aveda for recycling.

Please note that we will not have a Bear den meeting during the month of March.  However, we would like the scouts to work on the animal poster that will be due at the April Pack Meeting.  See pack website for details.

We have completed almost all of our achievements to earn the Bear rank!  We will continue to work on the World Conservation Award throughout the remainder of the year.

***Please start thinking about, and discussing with your scout, moving up into the Webelos rank.  We will have a parent meeting during the April Pack meeting to discuss the increase involvement on the part of the scouts at home and during meetings toward achieving the Webelos rank.***

Thank you for your help in leading all of our great Scouts.

January, 2012

Dear Bear Den Cub Scout Parents:

Our January Bear Den meeting was busy but fun.  The Bears are doing such a great job in completing their achievements.  We are on track to complete all achievements and to earn the World Conservation Award by May!

Today, we began this month’s achievement #18 by discussing Honesty and learned the proper way to introduce people to one another politely – please ask your scout to practice this important skill at home.

We also discussed good manners and practiced writing thank you notes.  Each scout will earn the Good Manners Beltloop at the January pack meeting.

We completed the following requirements:  Achievements 18e, 18h and the Good Manners Beltloop**

**If your scout would like to earn the Good Manners Pin, you can view the requirements at:

http://www.boyscouttrail.com/content/content/cub_scouts_good_manners_academic_pin_and_belt_loop-2030.asp

**There is a pin worksheet that can be filled out and returned to us via the notebook (the PDF file can be found on the bottom of the page from the link above).  Once the paperwork is submitted, we will sign it and ensure that your scout receives his pin at the next pack meeting.

The at-home assignment for this month is Achievement 18.  Below are the achievements printed from the handbook.  Please have your scout fill out the form on the other side of this letter and bring it to the February den meeting.

Thank you for your help in leading all of our great Scouts.

December 2011,

Dear Bear Den Cub Scout Parents:

Our December Bear Den meeting was filled with holiday cheer!  Thank you to Mrs. Fallacaro for providing us with a snack as well as organizing the craft activities and Mrs. Dolynchuk for volunteering to help during the meeting.  We appreciate your support!

December is a busy month for the Bears.  We had a tour of the police station which was interesting and informative.  The scouts asked a ton of questions of Officer Buckmier.  We saw the shooting range, the incoming call center for emergency/911 calls and interviewed a detective about her job.  We learned a lot about how to be safe and what to do in an emergency situation.   Thank you for Mrs. Fallacaro and Mrs. Shostak for coming along on the tour.

In seeking to complete this achievement, we discussed how to be safe in our neighborhoods, who the scouts can call on in the event of an emergency and they were fingerprinted.

The Bears are also in charge of emptying the donation boxes for both the coat and toy drives on Monday, December 12th and Wednesday, December 14th.  So we as a den checked the boxes and discussed the donation process.  We still need a volunteer to collect these items on Wednesday – please consider helping us with these important causes!  This is a great opportunity for your scout and his family to participate in a charitable cause together.

We completed the following requirements:  Achievements 7a, 7b, 7c, 7d, 7e, 7f, 3f, and

Elective 9a

Please remember to have your scout bring his binder and handbook to each monthly den meeting so we can follow-up on all at-home achievements and have the scouts follow along by filling out the paw prints.

Also, please continue to fill up your gallon-sized baggie with caps for our conservation project.  We will be collecting these baggies every 2-3 months at the den meeting.  The scouts will add them a box which will be mailed to Aveda for recycling.  It’s really a simple recycling project but one that has a big impact which they will see when we collect them all!

The at-home assignment for this month is either Achievement 10.  Below are the achievements printed from the handbook.  Please have your scout fill out the form on the other side of this letter and bring it to the December den meeting.

Thank you for your help in leading all of our great Scouts.

November, 2011

Our November Bear Den meeting was fun and interactive!  Thank you to Mrs. Cusanelli for bringing a snack.  We also had a Webelos denners, Sean Anderson and Colin Sullivan, helping this month.  We appreciate all of your support!

We added photos to our den scrapbook, made posters for the Coat and Toy drives that will take place in December and practiced our skit for the pack meeting.  We also discussed the word “respect” – ask your scout what it means!

In addition, we weighed our recycling caps and boxed them up in order to send them in for recycling.  Your scout will bring home his empty bag(s) so please continue to collect them at home.  We will try to send another box in either January or February of next year.

We completed the following requirements:  Achievements 6a, 8c, 8g, Elective 17b

Please remember to have your scout bring his binder and handbook to each monthly den meeting so we can follow-up on all at-home achievements and have the scouts follow along by filling out the paw prints.

Also, please continue to fill up your gallon-sized baggie with caps for our conservation project.  We will be collecting these baggies every 2-3 months at the den meeting.  The scouts will add them a box which will be mailed to Aveda for recycling.  It’s really a simple recycling project but one that has a big impact which they will see when we collect them all!

The at-home assignment for this month are either Achievement 1 and/or 2 (choose 1).  Below are the achievements printed from the handbook.  Please have your scout fill out the form on the other side of this letter and bring it to the December den meeting.

Thank you for your help in leading all of our great Scouts.

September, 2011

Dear Bear Den Cub Scout Parents:

Our September Bear Den meeting was educational and interesting!   The scouts met at the Fairfield Museum and Historical Center to learn about our town’s history.  We enjoyed a talk and walk around the town seeing home of the historic buildings and learning about our past.

Thank you to Walt at the Fairfield Museum for this wonderful “Colonial Life Walking Tour”.

We completed the following requirements:  Achievement 3c, 3d, and 8e

In addition, the scouts who were not at the August meeting received a binder with a binder pouch to hold the handbook.  We’d like this binder and handbook to accompany the scout to each monthly den meeting so we can follow-up on all at-home achievements and have the scouts follow along by filling out the paw prints.

For the 2011-2012 year, the Bear den will be working on the “Cub Scout World Conservation Award”.  Information can be found online or in the handbook on page 282.  Each scout was sent home with an information sheet as well as a gallon-sized baggie for our conservation project.  We will be collecting plastic caps from bottles that cannot be currently recycled through our local recycling program.  This cap recycle program is being run by the Aveda Corporation.  More Information can be found on their website:

http://www.aveda.com/aboutaveda/caps.tmpl

The at-home achievement for this month is #3a and #3j.  We’d like the scouts to bring their answers to this achievement to the October den meeting so we can hear what makes “America” special to them.  Please see below for requirements needed to complete this achievement as well as a worksheet with this letter.  Both have been added to the binder.  Please fill out the worksheet and place in the binder for discussion at our October den meeting.

Thank you for your help in leading all of our great Scouts.

Monday, June 13, 2011

Dear Bear Den Cub Scout Parents:

Today we completed the following achievements from your son’s Bear Handbook:

Achievement 15b, 15c - "Games, Games, Games!"

Achievement 16a, 16b, 16c - "Building Muscles"

The scouts who brought their handbook, filled out their pawprints in the back of their books to show we completed these 2 achievements.  The den leaders   also signed the appropriate sections in the handbook.  If your scout did not bring their handbook, please have them fill out these pawprints and check off both #'s 15 and 16 as completed.  We will do this at every den meeting so please ensure your scout brings their handbook every month!

Our special parent helper, Jen Dennett, assisted today and brought a healthy snack.  Webelos scouts who assisted were Jackson Shostak and Colin Sullivan.  Thanks for helping us have a great den meeting!

As a reminder, there are a number of achievements from your son’s handbook that must be completed by you at home, and you—as “Akela,” a leader—should review those with your son, and sign off in the handbook when it is complete.  Some of these (like requirements related to faith) are clearly family matters, many of these are part of what you will doing anyway as you raise your son, and others you will be glad to have (like doing chores around the house)!

Over the summer, we would like you and your scout to complete the following Bear “At Home” Achievements:

  •         Bobcat 1-7:  Review all with your scout.  He will be expected to know each of these at our next den meeting.  We will be meet with each scout         individually to ensure that all familiar with these requirements.
  •         Bobcat 8:  Complete the exercises in the parent’s guide, How to Protect Your Children From Child Abuse: A Parent’s Guide.

For planning purposes, our next den meeting will be on August 24, 2011.  Details will follow closer to the date.  We will also be setting a calendar for the 2011-2012 year and will be looking for parent assistance at each den meeting.  A sign-up e-mail will accompany the calendar.  In addition, all scouts need to wear their yellow class B shirt to the den meetings, bring their handbook and any at-home achievements if applicable.

Thank you for your help in leading all of our great Scouts.  Have a great summer!!
